Lasting Relief: How To Get Rid of Rosacea Permanently

Struggling with persistent redness, visible blood vessels or acne-like bumps on your face? If so, don’t worry; you’re not alone. We can help dial down the inflammation.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, rosacea affects at least 16 million US adults, about 1 in every 20. What’s more, this chronic inflammatory skin condition can be more than just a cosmetic concern; it can significantly impact your emotional and social wellbeing, with the stress of facing friends, family and co-workers acting as a trigger for flare-ups.

While there’s no magic wand to make rosacea disappear forever,  you can absolutely keep it under control. With the right routine and some TLC, you can kick those symptoms to the curb and rock that clear, comfy skin you deserve.

How To Get Rid of Rosacea Permanently: Is It Possible?

The short answer? Not totally. You can’t completely get rid of rosacea forever. But here’s the thing. You can become the boss of your rosacea by managing it and keeping symptoms at bay with a combination of lifestyle changes, a consistent skincare routine featuring the right products and, sometimes, medical treatments.

At Lighthouse, we’re all about helping you navigate the rosacea maze. We’ll give you the lowdown on how to treat rosacea with a skincare routine that actually works. But before we dive into our tailored collection of products, let’s explore what rosacea is and what makes it go wild.

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea primarily affects the central face, including the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. It can sometimes be mistaken for acne, dermatitis or other skin problems. Here’s the 101 on the most common symptoms.

  • Persistent redness and flushing: a constant blush or frequent episodes of intense facial redness.
  • Visible blood vessels: tiny blood vessels (telangiectasias) become dilated and noticeable.
  • Bumps and pimples: small, red, pus-filled bumps (papules and pustules) may appear.
  • Skin thickening: in some cases, the skin, particularly on the nose (rhinophyma), can thicken.
  • Eye irritation: rosacea can also affect the eyes, causing redness, dryness and a gritty sensation (ocular rosacea).

Rosacea Myths: Busted

No one knows what exactly causes rosacea, but it can sometimes run in the family, be brought on by an overactive immune system or simply be a side-effect of our crazy-busy and often stressful lives.

Here’s what we do know.

  • It’s NOT because you’re dirty! Rosacea is a medical condition that has nothing to do with an inadequate cleansing routine (although getting this right will certainly help keep symptoms at bay).
  • Rosacea is NOT contagious. Honestly, you can’t catch it from someone else.
  • It’s NOT just for older people. While rosacea is more common in adults over 30, it can affect people of all ages, including young adults and teenagers. It’s especially common in people with fair skin, blonde hair and blue eyes and in women, particularly during menopause.

Taming The Triggers

OK, so we don’t know exactly what causes rosacea. But we do know a lot about what sets it off. Think of these triggers as the “enemies” of calm, happy skin. Let’s get to know them – and how to fight back.

Love Spicy Food? Proceed With Caution

We get it, that Thai curry is calling your name. But those hot peppers (and that steaming bowl of ramen) can dilate blood vessels, leading to flare-ups. Spice things up gradually. Start with milder flavours and see how your skin reacts.

Wine-down Wednesday? Maybe Not

That after-work glass of wine might be a ritual, but alcohol is notorious for triggering rosacea flare-ups. Moderation is key, as ever. And remember, hydration is your superpower.  Alternate alcoholic beverages with water to minimize the effects.

Sun’s Out, SPF On

We all love a sunny day, but UV rays are basically kryptonite for rosacea-prone skin. They can increase inflammation and redness. Sunscreen is your best friend - every single day, rain or shine. Look for a broad-spectrum formula with a high SPF and reapply every two hours (especially if you’re sweating or swimming). Bonus points for rocking a cute hat and sunglasses!

Stress Less

Yes, we realize this is easier said than done.  But chronic stress can wreak havoc on your skin, triggering the release of inflammatory substances. Find your zen! Whether it’s yoga, meditation, hitting the gym or just listening to your favorite playlist, prioritize stress-reducing activities. And don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep.

Skincare Sabotage

Using harsh skincare products is like throwing fuel on the fire. Irritating ingredients and fragrances can disrupt your skin’s protective barrier, making it more vulnerable to rosacea flare-ups. Go for gentle, fragrance-free products specifically formulated for sensitive skin.  Look for natural ingredients that soothe and calm.

Weather Woes

Extreme temperatures, whether hot, cold, or windy, can aggravate rosacea.  Protect your skin from the elements. In winter, bundle up with a scarf and make sure you are wearing plenty of moisturizer suitable for sensitive skin

Microscopic Mayhem

Demodex mites, tiny creatures that live on everyone’s skin, may play a role in rosacea for some people. While you can’t completely eliminate these mites, keeping your skin clean and avoiding harsh scrubs can help keep them in check. If you suspect Demodex might be contributing to your rosacea, talk to one of our dermatologists for personalized advice.

How To Treat Rosacea

Managing rosacea often involves a combination of lifestyle modifications, targeted skincare and, in some cases, medical interventions. When it comes to skincare and makeup, the key is to use products and techniques that minimize irritation. One good guide: look for products that are noted as appropriate for sensitive skin or skin with rosacea — and avoid any products that sting, burn or cause irritation.

At Lighthouse, we understand the importance of gentle yet effective skincare in managing rosacea. Here are some of our top tips:

  1. Be Gentle: cleanse, moisturize and protect your skin daily with dermatologist-approved products specifically formulated for sensitive, rosacea-prone skin. Avoid harsh scrubbing, hot water and irritating ingredients. Opt for lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.
  2. Be Protective: Layer up with moisturizer and eye serums. And never forget to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 40 or higher, even on cloudy days.
  3. Be Proud: Don’t be afraid to use makeup. There’s plenty of choice out there, such as non-comedogenic makeup (won't clog pores) and fragrance-free products specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
